Broadview Donates $10,000 to Syracuse University's InclusiveU Program
December 10, 2024
Broadview Federal Credit Union celebrated its commitment to financial wellness and inclusion with a special pre-game recognition and donation during the Syracuse University Men’s Basketball game against UAlbany on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
Broadview, the presenting sponsor of the game, shined the spotlight on 2023 InclusiveU graduate Jack Legg and his family, recognizing his achievements with a commemorative game ball. As part of the evening’s festivities, Broadview donated $10,000 to the InclusiveU program, underscoring Broadview’s commitment to community impact and inclusion.
“Broadview’s partnership with InclusiveU is about empowering students like Jack to thrive,” said Michael Castellana, CEO of Broadview Federal Credit Union. “Jack’s story embodies the transformative power of education, inclusion, and financial literacy, and we’re honored to play a part in his journey.”
InclusiveU, a Syracuse University program that provides individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities access to a college experience, has changed countless lives—including Jack’s. A graduate of the program and now an employee at Side Arm Sports, Jack credits InclusiveU and Broadview’s financial wellness seminars, which are part of the program, for helping him gain critical skills such as budgeting, banking, and taking steps towards gaining financial independence.
“I learned a lot about how to use a debit card and how to check my bank accounts. and how to use a my card at a grocery store and at restaurants,” Jack said.
For Jack and his family, the impact of InclusiveU is immeasurable. “As a family, we never could have dreamed Jack would attend college like his sisters,” said Julie Legg, Jack’s mother. “InclusiveU and Broadview have given him tools for independence and confidence we could only hope for. He was able to go out on campus and do things on his own, which was fantastic.”
Jack’s time at Syracuse included serving as a team manager for the men’s lacrosse team and supporting basketball operations—a testament to his dedication and passion, something that also shined during his financial education classes.
“Jack is someone who was always willing to participate. He asked questions. He was doing work constantly. He was helping his peers. He was a leader in the classroom,” said Josh Jones, Professional Student Support Assistant with InclusiveU.
For Broadview Financial Wellness Educator Nancy Cassella, seeing Jack and the other students learn, grow and apply her teachings a win bigger than anything happening inside the Dome.
“It’s very heartwarming to see the students that go through the financial education session complete all 13 weeks and then go on and get jobs in the community. Hopefully they’ve taken the knowledge and education that they’ve gained to create their own budgets.”
